Periodontal treatment is the treatment and prevention of gum disease. Gum disease is caused by plaque which sticks to teeth, and as we eat, more food debris sticks to the plaque. If plaque is left to build up on and between teeth, it irritates the gums and makes them inflamed (red and swollen). The swelling can allow a space or ‘pocket’ to form beneath the tooth, which can get worse if untreated making the pocket deeper. This causes the gums to recede, exposing more of the tooth. If left untreated, the pocket can become so large that teeth may loosen and need to be extracted.
We offer a deep scale and polish and subgingival debridement (cleaning under the gum line) for the treatment and prevention of gum disease, and we always provide you with preventative advice.
